Hello there.

So, for May 4th I rewatched episodes 1-6, and when I was specifically watching the Prequels, I just realised how much I disliked the character of Mace Windu.

Firstly, don't get me wrong, he's got a cool lightsaber, and Samuel L. Jackson plays him well.

But Mace Windu, in my opinion, was one of the main, easily avoidable reasons that Anakin turned to the darkside.

His constant condescending attitude to Anakin, the moment when he tries to kill Sidious (something against the Jedi code, of which he's a MASTER), and many others make me feel like he's trying to get power for himself and that he is a secret Sith Lord, or something.

I just find him annoying.

Am I the only one??

How can you possibly dislike a character played by the almighty Samuel L. Jackson himself? Shame on you.

You're definitely not alone. One of the most recent episodes of the Clone Wars put the character's condescending attitude on display yet again, I can't blame Anakin for betraying him.
He's basically the sole reason Anakin (and Ahsoka) disagree with the Order.

I think if an actor other than Samuel L. Jackson played him he wouldn't be nearly as popular.

Yes exactly, btw, watching THAT episode of Clone Wars is exactly what's set me off on this.

Anakin, War Hero Anakin FREAKIN Skywalker, the man who's basically taken entire SYSTEMS back for the Republic is told by Windu in ROTS that he's not fit for the job at Utapau. WHAT?!

And yeah just his entire attitude to Ahsoka and Anakin, his condescending nature, he even says it himself that he doesn't trust Anakin.

If Mace acted more like A JEDI, then I think Anakin could have been saved from turning to the Dark Side.

(P.s. I know that's less interesting and all, but it would have saved us from just annoying contrivances and enraging character building).

Honestly, I am gonna play devils advocate here but Mace Windu kinda symbolizes alot of the Jedi values in my opinion. He doesnt have the best values of the Jedi at heart but with just how rigid and strict he is is his ways really shows this. Jedi have done some pretty messed up things in the past like tearing away force sensitive babies from their families to driving the Sith species on Korriban to near extinction. Yeah the Sith were very entuned with the dark side and arguably irredeemable and having force sensitive children not trained in the Jedi ways can be bad in the long run but this just shows how far Jedi will go to keep order in the galaxy. We can see this when Mace wanted to outright kill Palpatine instead of holding a trial because of just how powerful a dark side user can be, especially one in a place of power. Also Anakin is a prime example of someone disrupting the natural order of things. A boy who has great potential to become super powerful learning the ways of the Jedi and being granted many exceptions because of this power like being to old to be admitted into the order, rising through the ranks fast and his arrogance and tendency to be quick to anger. If you look at it from Mace's perspective, a SUPER conservative Jedi perspective, why would he trust Anakin? He was up and coming loose canon that had to much power for his own good. But I also found Windu to be annoying sometimes albeit an awesome plot device.

I have been saying this since the movie came out if Mace wouldn't have had it out for Anakin the whole time I don't think he would have turned.

I don't think Anakin wouldn't have turned if Mace was simply nicer to him, it was a lot of factors that switched him over to the dark side. Even if Palatine was arrested instead, he would still continue to tempt Anakin who is desperate to save his wife from the fate he keeps having visions of. I think he would have still turned him it would have just taken longer.

I don't think Mace being an asshole to Anakin was the sole factor for his turning. It was a lot of different factors but I think the biggest one was not having the proper master. If Anakin was taught by Qui-Gon instead of Obi I think Anakin's fate would have turned out much differently. That's why in the first movie the song that plays during Qui-Gon and Maul fight is called "Dual of the Fates" because this duel is deciding the fate of Anakin Skywalker.
