typical german names for dogs are, Rex, Bello, Hasso, Fiffi, Waldi, Wuschel.... Rex is the best of these typical german dog names.
i can also live with pal. so lets drink on pal.

as every one seems to be calling the dog either pal or dogmeat I thought I would call the dog meatdog.

I wouldn't like to use the same, recycled name, 'Dogmeat'. To me it sounds kind of bland, and lacks any positive traits. Though it works well to make them sound violent, I suppose.
I always see a dog as a companion, someone who is a friend, and finally, someone who is loved. I like the name, 'Buddy', for that reason. It makes them sound friendly.
Edit: The name 'Pal' also works well too!

I'm hopeful that I can name it myself. One of the mods I wanted for FNV was to be able to rename the dog.

Well in the gameplay trailer they showed at E3, it's just named Dog. Maybe you could stick with that and then if people want their own names, they can easily change it in the GECK
But as an alternative, Dogmeat would be certainly appropriate.
