I'd like to add that the thing is, the Brotherhood will always inevitably be driven into conflict with any rival power. The NCR will too, to a degree, but they're more open to negotiation, and have a few neighbouring "nations", like San Francisco, New Canaan and possibly New Reno and New Arroyo (unconfirmed if they're part of the NCR, though both are successful and still exist as of 2281) with whom they coexist, so it's not like they just wipe out any competitors, even if certain elements of the Republic may play dirty to annex them. Issue is, the Brotherhood does.

Anywhere they've gone, the Brotherhood has always inevitably followed the same rules of claiming tech as their own. That was what led to the Brotherhood war to begin with. It was a war to destabilise a growing power that threatened the Brotherhood. Same with the conflict that possibly arises with the Minutemen. The Brotherhood of Steel have an utter inability to co-exist peacefully. Unless the BoS is kept in check by the NCR following a peace agreement, every other ending in which the Brotherhood survives shows them basically robbing travellers at gunpoint. I think it really shows how far the Brotherhood has fallen from it's old glory, to basically being a band of well organised and better mannered raiders.
