There seems to be somewhat of a consensus here on avoiding energy weapons. I rarely use them either. I wonder if a lot of it does have to do with the look and/or feel of them. Changing that would go against the history of Fallout, so I don't know if that's a great idea on the devs part. I would gladly mod my energy weapon parts in fallout 4 to look more like contemporary sci-fi weapons, though.
Mines on the other hand... I think that's a given. They're the least useful of the explosive weapons, and in general I find mines/grenades more useful to sell. I happily take the caps, when I compare that to their killing potential. In addition to melee weapons, the likelihood of using them is vastly increased when they have a designated hotkey(mods to the rescue). The need to switch weapons before use kills all of the excitement. Games in general incentivize saving explosives for dire situations, so they just pile up.
