PostSubject: LOD Generating Software for New Vegas   Sun Jul 19, 2015 4:51 pm

Hey guys, i have a problem: i am making the LOD for the landscape of my mod...i know it takes ages but i got it starting and at some point ( halfway through the mape) it simply stopped...so i am wondering: Since there are LODding software for TES which do the work really faster asnd good quality too it seems, can they work on Fallout too?

Example: Oscape.

Are there other ( fallout new vegas compatible ) software for this?

Oscape should be an excellent alternative but it apparently has no FNV or FO3 support :'(

Crap...it seems that lod generation simlpy stopped halfway and does not resume how do i check/fix this error ( in case it's true that it actually stopped?)...i wonder why Bethesda guys never optimized this system, it's just horrible

If you find one share the love and post a link, LOD is a special hell of its own to get done. With a worldspace of mine it generated with the flaw of not being able to make the textures load.. so I am stuck with a fun black and purple flashing LOD (which is fun to have to explain in its description).


Aside from that though, have you tried deleting/moving the current LOD data? To my knowledge there are two in the Data folder. One is located under Data>LODSettings>[worldpsacename] and the other is Data>Meshes>Landscape>LOD>[worldspacename]. Every time I have went to re-generate I always moved those two to the desktop to be safe in case something corrupts or an error occurs.

did you complete landscape generation?
to me it stopped generating after a while...how do i check if it works /fix the problem? Sad

ok, it is still generating, it will simply take forever...how long did it take to you Fury to finish the landscape Lod?

Mine is 336 Chunks big with 4000 Cells

What I suggested was to see if that can help you re-generate the LOD, if you already have the files there the GECK likes to go full retard and decide not to update anything or just delete everything because why not. But yes, mine has completed generation probably 10+ times easy, each time though I did backup all LOD files and the ESP just to be on the safe side of things. Just wish I could get them stupid textures to generate, at least fog can hide the mess.

To give you an exact time on how long it will take though is really unknown. For me it was usually around 8-12 hours, give or take of course. Really all I can say is to just wait it out and don't get impatient. Go watch a movie, take a nap, or play on a Console if you have one, whatever to pass the time seeing as generation hogs up your CPU. Only advice in the end is to be patient, and backup often.

I spent nine hours processing LOD for a worldspace in a mod that I never even released. I've read that if it stops, it can continue where it left off, hence the existing data being saved up to that point before the stoppage. Mine went without a hitch, just ate my cpu processing speed and didn't allow me to use any other programs, but still worked in the end. I don't remember my chunk and cell count, but it was massive for my pc, and forced me to change the GECK .ini file to 3x3 instead of 5x5 for the time I was working on it.

so you suggest me to move all generated files somewhere else and restart if it stops?

Geck Lodding is so tedious...they Have to get it better with FO4...

Strange though, the geck shows activity both CPU and Memory...but actualy doesn't do shit...ok restarting process...let's hope it will finish in this lifetime closed eyes smile

I recommend moving them even before any issues, better safe than sorry. Make a folder on your desktop (call it something like "backup"), take your esp and all those LOD things and put them there (copy the .esp, move the LOD ones).

Also if it doesn't affect your PC then do whatever I suppose, my PC is crap and can hardly run Fallout at what some would call a "decent" fps so I did other things while it would generate.

well, my lodding generator arrived to half in roughly 2 days considering the sleep mode during meals...and toilet times...
But if it stops halfway it's uselesss...so i just restarted the process...let's hope it does not stop again...otherwise i'll need someone else capable to do the job...if i ever find someone.

You think someone can be of help to do this work? they just nbeed to open the plugin in geck and just run the lod generating...obviously if it takes short time.

The landscape LOD generation process is a tedious & boring, waiting task Sad
you can count 5 min for each 4xcell on a good computer... the bigger your landscape is, the longer the wait... Guys from project Brazil told me their landscape generation process took 15 days of non stop working on a specifically tailored computer... 15 boring days... When i see app like Oscape that can generate LOD in less than 3 minutes .. a shame it's not available to FNV or FO3 :'(

I advice anyone who want to generated LOD to follow step by step this tutorial :

Normally if your landscape LOD processing stop somewhere, the existing files will be saved, just relaunch the process to continue where it stopped.
Be aware the Geck "might" look like it's stuck, but the process is still working (most of the time...) you can check in the monitor panel to be sure, but better is to leave the computer alone, remove the energy saver timing, and Obviously do not do any other task on it while processing !

And for the purple textures, it's normally just a folder to copy in the right place (again look at the tut)

it stops for hours sometimes...and when i remove the files from the folder it restarts...maybe it's really in a point of taking forever...which means i have all time to make 3d models while i wait for my landscape to complete ( the main landscape just needs texturing to be complete, the shape is exactly what i want it to be)...so....nahh more than waiting i can use that time to work on something else...seems like it does not completely use all my CPU (just half)...so let's model! ^_^

@pizzamonster94, you should keep the generated files in the folder (backup them in case if you want)
or process will restart from the beginning and you'll loose the already existing meshes, and time...

Check sometimes also if a window "error" does not appear in Geck, you just have to clic "yes for all" to continue the process. If Geck is stuck this windows could not appear, blocking the process.

Btw it's probably not a good idea to work on other things while the Geck is making the landscape LOD.
On my computer it generally use 100% cpu processing time, and can hang out if need to dispatch processing time within some apps.
I generally launch this before going to sleep ^^

well, i have the pc in my same room so keeping it on during sleep isn't a good idea, plus i have to tweak the sleep mode, and there's infermal hot here, dont want my pc to overheat closed eyes smile

btw, how can i find an error if GECK is freezed? ( so if i touch it it crashes)

If your worldspace is not too big (4 to 30 cells), 8 to 10 hours should be enough to generate the complete worldspace. As soon as it use more than 50 cells the process will took more than 1 day (more than 24 hours processing time).

If your Geck is freezed , you have to relaunch it, and relaunch the LOD generation, it will follow the process and skip existing LOD meshes (will not regenerate existing ones), then the error will appear if there's one.

If you plan on shutting down your PC each night, you'll have to repeat this each day and progress step by step. (Again depend on the size of the landscape)

Again if you plan to use your computer at the same time there a very sure possibility the Geck will crash.

Long and boring are the key words here Sad

3888 < x < 4000 cells ( cannot read correctly because Windows cut half of that number)

in meanwhile,, building a lego set i just got closed eyes smile so no boring...while playing a song on youtube

The time that it takes the GECK. to generate LOD meshes is directly related to the number of "chunks" that it has to generate, which depends on the number of cells in your world space. For a small world (up to about 20 chunks) it may only take a few minutes; for a larger world space (20-50 chunks), the time increases to around 30-60 min; a world space with more than 50 chunks generally takes several hours. To generate an entire heightmap created in the heightmap editor (circa 1360 chunks) it will take around 2-3 weeks of non-stop generation.

fortunately Empire at War game des not eat much CPU power, Yesterday i was both playing that and making LOD and it kept going Smile

one funny thing i noticed is that it stopped right where it stopped last attempt: 189 NIF files...exact same number no moer no less at rougly half the map
