Tombstone Review: The Cube Trilogy (Part 2: HYPERCUBE) 9f26f816

Hello there readers, and welcome to Part 2 of my three part series on the cult sci-fi movie trilogy of "The Cube". Today I shall be covering its less than stellar 2002 sequel, "HYPERCUBE" directed by Andrzej Sekuła. So without further hesitation and delay, allow me to start this month of ghosts and goblins with "The Cube 2: HYPERCUBE":
Genre: What makes a sequel good? Sometimes it doing the same thing as its predecessor, but doing it differently. Other times it’s about going in a completely different direction then the first movie. There are times when it takes up directly where the first film left off, so as to continue a linear story. There are many sequels out there that are as good if not better than that of the prequel, but for every good sequel there are about 4 bad ones if not more. Horror movie sequels are almost always bad, with the exception of a couple that were in fact awesome. This movie, in a way abandons a lot of the horror aspects of the first movie and replaces it with more sci-fi elements that border on the confusing at times.

Basic Plot:  Eight strangers find themselves waking up in a strange cube shaped room, with no memory of how they got there? However, they soon find out that they’re in a different kind of cube to that of the last movies. They are in a fourth dimension where our laws of physics don’t matter. In this cube, reality is subjective, and what they believe to be fact can easily be changed. Are they doomed? Or can they unravel the secrets of the “Hypercube” in order to survive this ordeal.

Level of Blood and Gore: Unlike the last movie, there is a lack of any serious blood and gore. I would assume most of the budget went into the special effects of the cube itself. You see bodies decay, so you have a rather gooey mummy like appearance which some might consider gore.  Besides that we have people being stabbed, decapitation, a man being shred to pieces by a strange floating object, and IMPLIED cannibalism.

Kills: The kills in this movie deviate from the first movie as they move to a more simplistic method rather than that of the traps in the first movie. There is a major trap that is constantly following the survivors, but that would be going into spoiler territory. So the deaths we do see is a person being hanged, a woman shot in the head, a person’s neck is snapped, people are stabbed and decapitated. Honestly, this feels like a different film to that of the original movie as a result of this, but that is just my opinion.

Setting: Like the last movie, the majority of this movie takes place inside of the HYPERCUBE, which is a much more tricked out version of the Cube, I suppose. The rooms do change, but unlike the last movie the colour scheme remains the same. From there on, we are introduced to some different time and space defying situations for our heroes. While this makes some of the scenes interesting, just to see what is about to happen to our heroes in this room, but it did not hold my attention long enough for me to enjoy it.

How It Racks up:  I dislike this sequel, for a couple of reasons. My biggest problem with it being that it seems to rely too much on the sci-fi points of this movie and not enough on the survival or mystery elements, which in a way would result in a good sci-fi movie were it not for the fact that it re-uses some character arcs from the first movie (Spoilers ahead):
Spoilers:

Despite that this is a movie by Lionsgate, who would go on to do the survival horror film franchise SAW, they seem to try to distance themselves far from the genre before SAW even came out. That being said, I am merely pointing out my opinion on the movie, but some people might enjoy this movie even thought I did not. This movie has all of the originals ideas, but none of its subtlety when dealing with existentialism.
If you want ta dumb movie trying to be smart, then this might be your cup of tea. Yet it did not seem exciting enough for me to really enjoy.

Overall Mark: 3/10
I did not like this movie upon watching it first, but I would recommend it to anyone who was watching this trilogy as I believe you should always watch the good with the bad when it comes to movie franchises. Would I re-watch this movie? I really dont think so. I actually think this movie's concept was pretty good, but its execution was much to be desired.I would recommend giving it a watch at least once if your watching the Cube Trilogy.

This movie is Rate R for blood, nudity, sexual content, and implied cannibalism.

Remember folks if you have a movie you want me to review leave it in a comment below, and I will do my best to review it. As it is my favorite month of the Year of Halloween, I will be trying my best to get out a few reviews out before hand. So leave me a movie, and maybe I will review it.

I've seen the three movies and hypercube really sucks and it's so weird. Only watched this one once and seriously, wtf happends at the end? an experiment? this is supposed to be about a goverment experiment created by some friki gamer guy and an asian women that i believe is a... cyborg? holy shit closed eyes smile.

I'm gonna put this in a spoiler in case someone wants to watch the movie

Spoiler:

Everything in this movie is so hilarious and weird, and the special effects are like the ones from Ben Hur (1959, not 2016 xd)
oh my god...

But i'd highly recommend it if you want to get your head really messed up.

Yeah Hyper Cube is the worse movie in the series. I think that is why they went back and did the prequel because of the negative reactions for this movie. They should have just stuck with what was good and liked from the 1st movie.
As you said I recommend watching it once if you are watching the whole series, but you really can skip it and just watch Cube and Cube Zero.
Great review! I can't wait to read the next one!
