I trust Fawkes, Dogmeat, and Rex mostly. Everyone else is meh to me. And if it comes to mods, well Desmond Lockheart then. That ghoul probably has more experience in battles or combat than any other companion I know.

Fallout 3: Fawkes was the indestructable tank.

New Vegas: ED-E being able to see where everyone was from a mile away helps out a lot.

Mods: Russel is a bad ass, is there anything else that needs to be added about him.

For Fallout 3, I enjoyed having Dogmeat by my side.

For New Vegas, Cass has always been my go-to companion as I believe she's the most interesting of the bunch with her dialogue and personality.

I have yet to try any modded companions.

FNV Mod: Niner.
He's pretty cool and interesting. He reminds me of my cousin: always getting high and dragging me around everywhere.

For fallout new vegas vanilla I would have to go with Boone, as he if slightly in your debt and trusts you back. If we are talking a modded game I would have to go with willow, because she is such a well made companion.

My Favorites:

1: Arcade Gannon: being hilarious at times, having a interesting quest, and being generally awesome has made him my favorite person to use has a human meat shield.

2: ED-E: Being the only assistance to the Courier in Lonesome Road and sacrificing himself to save the NCR, and Legion has made this hero my second favorite companion not to mention the music he plays.

3. Sargent Shultz, and "Lt." Ripper: They're deathclaws, need I say more?

4. Cass "Stupid B*tch": I loved here quest and the way she was a giant alcoholic, when I feel down I think about Cass's life style and say "Boy I sure am happy I'm not a strong alcoholic, with no hope of getting my life back on track."

5. Boone: Being my first follower ever, and with a sad story to go with his character he will always be remembered as the guy who always scared the hell out of by shooting a bighorner 50 miles away".

Your all-time favourite companion mod?

FNV Modded: Deadpool Companion.

What's not to like? It's Deadpool!! I love the way Cpt. Rex made the mod, he was able not only to bring the look to Deadpool, but actually put the words of the almighty Nolan North into the game! I love the dialogue he chooses and frankly Deadpool is pretty fun to run around with, especially when it comes to killing fiends and exploding things.

Anyone that didn't get in the way. So Boone has to be the best option. Never saw a need for companies. I like them for their comments about what's going on at the current time. Hopefully in F4 they have more to say. I need more dialogue on the long walks across the Wasteland.

Vanilla New Vegas: Veronica
NV w/ DLC: EDE
NV w/ mods: Willow or Deadpool

For Vanilla It's Boone - Always good to have Sniper cover  
And for mod I'd go with Russell - Guy's got some issues but he puts his craziness to good use; and hes got good background

The 2 main companions I use in Fallout New Vegas is Rex and Lilly because Rex can knock down opponents and Lilly can do maximum melee damage then the rest of the companions.

Do modded companions count? If so, then I'm going to go with Niner and Boone.

Boone is a very badass character, great with a rifle, a valuable asset in my fallout squad just simply because he kicks ass.

As for Niner, he's also great with guns, SMGs in particular. Plus, the personality, and the fact he gave me a pretty classy suit.

Both these companions put together, in my opinion, make for a very powerful combination. I can literally just sit back and let them take care of my enemies for me

Then in that case, I'm going with Boone and Rex. Simply because I like having a dog with me wherever I go in this game. There's just some kind of appeal to having just you and your dog roam the wasteland, fighting off raiders. Like in 'I Am Legend'.

If only dogs can fetch grenades and weapons for you in Fallout. Useful as hell.

Veronica and EDE. Veronica packs quite a punch and rock that power armor. EDE with the upgrades is so useful and has a good ending in the lonesome road dlc.

My favourite 2 companions to have are Boone and EDE.
I just think Boone is pretty badass plus he is a sniper and is also pro-NCR, so he pretty much just fits in well as a companion to my character in the wasteland. EDE's beeps can sometimes get tiring I'll admit but I can look past that for a while aha.

Sometimes I'd take Rex too because I love having a dog companion in fallout games, Panther explained why well a couple of posts above.

Boone because hes badass and then the second would be either ed-e, because he pretty good and is also a portable workbench, or rex because dogs make everything better.
