I've never played as a female in a Fallout game. I prefer to play as a character of the same gender as myself because it just feels more immersive to do so. BritishBoyStar pretty much gave the perf answer a couple of posts above

Well I usually play a male in almost any game that allows me to. I'm a male in RL and usually most of the characters I create contain characteristics of strong male protagonists in other game franchises that I admire. I see things from a male's perspective during playthroughs and when I try to play female, I can just never get comfortable with her.
Now I will admit that every release I do at least one playthrough as a female to try to experience everything playing the gender will unlock. It's also nice to just have a beautiful woman gracing my screens rather then gruzzled drug addicted menaces my normal characters are!

I've played as a males 99% of the time, but I had a female character once to see how differently you would react to certain situations. Without being vulgar, I'm referencing primarily the idea of being captured by legion or raiders, it would tend to worry me alot more as a female character than a male.
I found it didn't effect the roleplay aspect of Fallout in any enhanced way, so I went back to my default creation method of using my own face, or someone from Dragbody's packs.
