I'm upgrading my PC and I'm curious if having such powerful parts will lead to better performance for a heavily modded game like New Vegas or Skyrim, since these games are 32 bit games.

I run on a 1080ti and it shreds everything with ease.
Equally as important is your CPU thanks to, well, Gamebryo

I have a 1080 Ti myself. It generally punishes most games that aren’t Bethesda made.
Although I do get 60fps+ in Fallout & Skyrim, I will dip to 35-40 in some places due to the engine and ENB modifications.

Like Weiji said, cpu is important. I think my 4970k is bottlenecking my rig. In time I’ll upgrade.

I'm getting a Ryzen 7 1800X. Would that help?

With a 1080TI and a 4K Monitor I can play New Vegas heavy with texture mods and ENBs in 4K resolution with ease, but like the others have said - cpu is important too, I need a new one

Playing in 4K? That's cool. Is getting a good CPU there to prevent bottlenecking or does the game use a lot of the CPU?

Right now it's 1080p60fps but I'll be moving to 1440p144fps.

Yeah, get the 1080 Ti. With Ryzen 1800x there won't be any issues with Skyrim and New Vegas on 1440p. However, heavily modded Fallout 4 might be another story, and anything below an i7 7700k or 8700k/8600k is gonna be noticeable. See, FO4 is one of the extremely few games that Ryzen still struggles with (another one I remember is GTA V), since it's a brand new CPU architecture. It's probably the main reason why AMD made a deal with Bethesda to make their future games optimized for Ryzen as good as possible.

I don't play much of Fallout 4 so it won't be much of a problem for me. Thanks.

Can't speak for Fallout 4 as I haven't done much testing, but if you're going to run at 1440p with 144monitor, you'll have to cap it at around 60-80FPS for games like New Vegas and SKyrim.

My monitor has G-Sync, but G-Sync screws with this old engines. I get stutters and physics bugs with G-SYNC and any FPS over 60 (59FPS to be precise). Just be aware of this.

I've had two different rigs since I first start modding NV.

I went from a 2500K + XFX 7970BE to 4790k + 980Ti to, what I run now, a 4790k + 1080Ti with 144 monitor. My performance hasn't really improved in New Vegas or Skyrim and I've kept relatively the same load order and settings. All I'm saying is, be aware.

PostSubject: Re: GTX 1080 ti for a heavily modded game   GTX 1080 ti for a heavily modded game EmptyWed Nov 08, 2017 7:50 am

What really bottlenecks these kinds of games is the CPU and RAM. Sure you can get better framerate but the game is so old that even a 5 year old mid-range card can run New Vegas at max settings with NMC texture pack and ENB.

Games like NV on the other hand have a ton of variables it needs to calculate and keep track of, especially where physics and object placement is concerned. This is why the console versions of the game become unplayable around 30 hours in, forcing you to start a new save file. A really good example of just how much CPU matters is Dwarf Fortress; that game looks like it's made for an old DOS computer but no modern computer can run it after a couple generations, it becomes unplayable later on because it has a living, breathing world that has a generated history running back long before the age you started playing in. In Dwarf Fortress, you can slice off an elf bastards tongue for giving you shit about chopping down your trees and that severed tounge is now a data entity in the world that can get frozen, hot, moldy, and eventually decay. Another dwarf can slip on the tongue, a dwarven child can see the severed tounge, get traumatized by it then go on to write a song about the tongue later in life, and inspire a local town to build a statue in it's honor. Now imagine a game where shit like that is happening but thousands of those calculations are being made in real time.

@cyber_funk I just read up about Dwarf Fortress since you brought it and it's very complex on how it works. So yeah, a GTX 1080 ti, a Ryzen 7 1800X and 16gb of RAM, that should be powerful enough to handle a lot of information for a heavily modded play though of NV.

I have a 144 monitor with gsync and I too noticed some physics issues. Mostly with lockpicking moving super fast but that is it that I see. Switching from 60hz to the 144 gave me alot of improvement with render issues. Soon I`ll be getting the 1080ti and I expect it to be a large boost over my gtx970. I may look into a cpu as well. The game normally runs very well except for loading times can sometimes take longer then it should.
